MEDIA ADVISORY: “Block Party” This Thursday at U.S. Capitol
Progressives Throw a “Block Party” to Call For an End to John Boehner’s Obstructionism
WASHINGTON, DC — On Thursday morning, progressive organizations working on a range of issues — including environmental justice, voter protection, LGBT equality, racial justice, immigration, labor, and reproductive justice — will gather outside the U.S. Capitol to call for an end to House Speaker John Boehner’s refusal to bring popular pieces of legislation up for a vote. Speaker John Boehner has led the House to block just about every piece of progressive legislation that has come to his doorstep since 2011. At every turn, Speaker Boehner has chosen to block tremendously popular legislation from seeing the light of day in favor of aligning himself with an increasingly radical right-wing agenda. Leaders from a wide range of progressive organizations will come together Thursday to a “block party” to show the country the true cost of Speaker Boehner’s lack of leadership on key issues. EVENT DETAILS: DATE/TIME: Thursday, Nov 21, at 9am ET LOCATION: Upper Senate Park, at the corner of Constitution Ave NE & Delaware Ave NE (on the north side of the Capitol building) PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS (list in formation): Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA), Energy Action Coalition, GetEQUAL, Hip Hop Caucus, NAACP, Planned Parenthood, Sierra Club and Student Sierra Coalition, The League of Young Voters, United We Dream “Each generation, Congressional leadership has the opportunity to either move America forward or set us in reverse — and Speaker Boehner’s clear choice has been to block any and all efforts to move this country forward,” said Heather Cronk, co-director of GetEQUAL. “The stakes are high — we’re fighting to protect our children from gun violence, protect LGBT workers, end the separation of immigrant families, save the right to vote for millions, and save our planet. Yet, again and again, Speaker Boehner chooses to block progress rather than to embrace popular and much-needed reforms.”
